Have you ever dreamt of just using an USB flash drive to lock and unlock your pc.Ya, you can do it. Once installed and configured, this little freeware utility- Predator allows you to turn a USB flash drive
into a key, which you can use to lock and unlock your computer. Also it
would be great for security purposes, sometimes you may need to leave
your pc for few moments and to protect your machine from others,
you may need some security measures. This is when you come to use
Predator.
There are lots of functions in this freeware:
- PREDATOR records all security-related events in a log file: start, alarms, stop. By reading this log, you will know if intruders have tried to use your computer while you have been away.
- It can replicate this log on your Twitter account, allowing you to remotely monitor all access-control activity on your PC.
- It frequently changes the security codes recorded on your USB drive. If an intruder manages to copy your stick, this copy will not work because the codes on your own stick will have changed in the meantime.
- It disables the Windows task manager when you unplug the USB drive. Nobody can stop it with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
- It disables the CD Autorun feature in Windows, to prevent intruders from running malware on specially crafted CDs.
- It lets you regain control of your computer if you lose your stick: when you start the software for the first time, you set a password that will unlock your session if your USB drive is not available.
- It can sound an audible alarm if somebody enters an invalid password.
- Also, you can protect several PCs with the same USB flash drive, e.g. your home and office computers.
Get started:
- Download & install Predator from its official website.
- Then plug in your USB flash drive (If you are having any data on your flash drive then its ok, it wont be deleted or altered,so feel free to use any of your flash drive(pendrive).
- Run Predator, create a password and click OK to continue. (When you run it for the first time, a box will appear asking you to create a password)
- In the Preference window, enter a secure password (If you lose your USB drive, you’ll use it to unlock your computer).
- If you want, you can check the Always Required box and you’ll be asked to enter the password each time you use your thumbdrive to unlock your PC.
- Under Flash Drives, Select the correct flashdrive.
- You can play with other settings like alarm, autostart with window etc; when you’re done, click “Create key” and then OK.
- Then
Predator will exit. Then restart the programme. A few seconds later,
the icon will turn green, alerting you that Predator is running.
By default, in every 30 seconds, Predator will check to see that your USB drive is plugged in. If it isn’t, your computer will dim and lock down. You can change this time period in Monitoring- Read interval. Also you can configure your twitter account in the advanced setttings tab. You can also use one flash drive to lock more than one pc and can use more than one USB flash drive for locking/unlocking a single pc.
